• The Point at the western tip near Bogue Inlet is the classic shell-hunting spot — plan to arrive with a low outgoing tide.
• Avoid mid-day summer heat; sunrise walks are cooler and less crowded, and the shells haven't been picked yet.
• After tropical systems, augers and knobbed whelks reach the strand in numbers you won't see any other time of year.
