Reading the beach

Walk the falling tide two hours before low water — the northern tip near Fort Clinch and the sand flats around Peters Point catch the heaviest wrack after an easterly blow.

• Start early — the beach is wide and quiet before the umbrellas arrive, and low-angle sun makes shell colour pop.
• Watch for dark gravel patches at Peters Point; that's where whelks and shark teeth tend to concentrate.
• Skip the mid-island resorts and walk toward the inlets — that's where the currents drop the best shells.
