Olive Shells: Glossy, Cylindrical Gems of Southern Beaches

Small, smooth, and surprisingly patterned — olives are the state shell of South Carolina and one of the most rewarding finds for beginners.

Olive shells (family Olividae) glide across intertidal sand at night, leaving faint furrows in their wake. Their glossy, near-cylindrical shells range from pale cream to deep chocolate and are prized for the tight zig-zag lettering the lettered olive is named for.

This hub links our olive identification pages, cleaning notes, and the beaches — from Kiawah to Sanibel — where whole olives regularly reach the wrack line.
