Shark Eye

A smooth, round moon snail whose glossy tan spiral gives it the distinctive dark 'eye' — one of the East and Gulf coasts' most-collected small shells.

How to identify a shark eye

Glossy globose shell 1–3 inches wide with a low spire and a deeply set umbilicus partly covered by a callus. Overall pale tan to grey-blue with a darker central 'pupil'.

  • Round, polished body whorl
  • Dark spiral 'eye' at the apex
  • Callus partly filling the umbilicus (separates from Atlantic Moon Snail)

  • Moon snails are burrowing predators — check for a soft body before pocketing what looks like an empty shell.
  • Note the umbilicus — a partly-filled callus is the shark eye field mark.
