Reading the beach

Ocracoke's National Seashore beaches renew with every tide — the further you drive down the Ocracoke pony pen and campground beaches, the fewer footprints and the better the shells.

Shelling tips

• Arrive on the first ferry and drive south along the beach access ramps — you'll have the strand almost to yourself before mid-morning.
• This is one of the last east-coast beaches where Scotch bonnets still wash up whole — check the primary and secondary wrack lines after any storm.
• Bring a 4WD or plan to walk; the best shell stretches are well beyond the Ocracoke village beaches.
