The Tidal Keepsakes Team

A short field ethic that keeps your finds legal, protects live animals, and leaves the beach in shape for the next collector.

Leave Live Shells

Check every gastropod's aperture and every bivalve's hinge for a soft body before pocketing. Return live specimens gently to shallow water where you found them.

Know the Rules

  • Live queen conch collection is prohibited statewide.
  • Live shell collection is prohibited entirely on Sanibel and in many state parks — check local signage.
  • General live gastropod limits (where allowed) are typically two per person per day; verify current FWC regulations before your trip.

Leave the Beach You Want to Find

  • Pack out everything you pack in.
  • Refill any holes you dig on the wet strand — nesting sea turtles and shorebirds notice.
  • Give live animals — starfish, sand dollars, hermit crabs — a wide berth and don't stack them for photos.
