Guide
Ethical Shell Collecting
The most rewarding way to collect is mindfully. A few simple habits protect the coastal ecosystem and the experience for the next beachcomber.
Core Principles
- Only take empty shells — never one with a living creature inside.
- Leave living sand dollars, hermit crabs, and snails where you find them.
- Take a few favorites rather than filling buckets.
- Check local rules — some beaches and parks limit or prohibit collecting.
- Fill any holes you dig and leave the beach as you found it.
How to Tell if a Shell Is Occupied
Look and smell. If there's tissue inside, a strong odor, or movement, gently return it to the water. When in doubt, leave it.
