Bay, calico, and lion's-paw — scallops are the most instantly recognisable bivalve on the beach and a hallmark of coastal design.
Scallop shells (family Pectinidae) fan outward from a central hinge in a pattern so iconic it has become shorthand for the coast itself. The ribs, ears, and color banding vary enormously between species — from the delicate calico to the massive, ruddy lion's-paw.
